It's March, which here in America means we're in the midst of the annual NCAA Men's College Basketball Tournament. It's one of the most eagerly anticipated sporting events on the American sports calendar. 68 college basketball teams in one giant single elimination tournament. It's like the FA Cup, only with less magic.
Here at Cartilage Free Captain we're getting into the spirit of March Madness by releasing our own bracket, the 68 best Tottenham Hotspur-related Twitter arguments. We've gone through the first two rounds of the Chirpy Region and the You'll Have to Ask the Chairman Region. Now let's turn our attention to the Archway Region.
As always, there's no voting, but feel free to argue in the comments.
First Round
#1 Christian Eriksen doesn't score enough vs. #16 Spurs just need more grit and heart to succeed
Normally I'd give this a little more thought but to pick the huge upset would be to validate the brief reign of Tim Sherwood and I refuse to do that. Eriksen wins in a blowout.
Winner: #1 Christian Eriksen doesn't score enough
#8 Was signing William Gallas a good thing? vs. #9 Don't care if we lose as long as we play good football
The only reason Gallas was controversial was because prior to playing at Spurs he also played for both Arsenal and Chelsea. He was called a 'traitor' and a 'donkey' but in truth he was objectively pretty good for us. The thing about the "good football" argument is that it's kind of false: yes, Spurs fans want to play good football, and they ALSO want to win. Anyone who says otherwise is lying.
Winner: #9 Don't care if we lose as long as we play good football
#5 Tottenham break good players vs. #12 We forgot the meaning of the FA Cup
The "Tottenham break good players" argument sure felt true... until this season. It's amazing what one good season will do to your perception. However, the FA Cup arguments will never die. Try and convince an English dyed-in-the-wool Spurs supporter that we should bail on the FA Cup, ever. Glory. I said GLORY!
Winner: #12 We forgot the meaning of the FA Cup
#4 Andros Townsend is good/bad vs. #13 Tim Sherwood spoke some truth
We see you, - Shane.
Winner: #4 Andros Townsend is good/bad
#6 I hate Chelsea/West Ham more than Arsenal vs. #11 Wouldn't be the worst thing if we signed Theo Walcott
Hate Chelsea or West Ham more than Arsenal? LOL, no you don't.
Winner: #11 Wouldn't be the worst thing if we signed Theo Walcott
#3 Play the kids in Europa vs. #14 If Giovani Dos Santos just got a chance...
Gio was a party animal, a loose cannon, and never quite as good as what his ability suggested. Meanwhile, so long as we're in the Europa League, there will always be people who wish we weren't in the Europa League.
Winner: #3 Play the kids in Europa
#7 Jermain Jenas was actually good vs. #10 Will Arsenal implode when Wenger goes?
Jermain Jenas was never the answer at central midfield, but he was a perfectly cromulent player for us when he was there. He's a better football analyst than he ever was a player, though. Meanwhile, the #10 seed I think might have accidentally slipped in from the Arsenal bracket.
Winner: #7 Jermain Jenas was actually good
#2 Is fourth place better than a trophy? vs. #15 Roberto Soldado needs more time
Bobby's fine. There's no way he could've been that bad coming off of the season he had in Spain. He'll bounce back next year! He needs to acclimate! He'll just put one in off his ass and it'll be full steam ahead. He just needs confidence. Maybe if we sign another Spaniard... If we cheer him on a little more.... He's saying all the right things. Oh God it's all gone wrong
Winner: #2 Is fourth place better than a trophy?
Second Round
#1 Christian Eriksen doesn't score enough vs. #9 Don't care if we lose so long as we play good football
The weird thing about the Eriksen meme is that it only cropped up this year, when Eriksen was surrounded by better players playing good football and when he didn't have to put the team on his back to win. That said, it's a thing now and will continue to pop up after every game Eriksen doesn't score or play well. And we've already established that the "goof football" meme is a straight lie. It's close, but I'm picking chalk.
Winner: #1 Christian Eriksen doesn't score enough
#12 We forgot the meaning of the FA Cup vs. #4 Andros Townsend is good/bad
The thing about the FA Cup argument is that it can be pulled out of the ether whenever Spurs lose a cup game. Played the kids and lost to Wainscotting FC? WE FORGOT THE MEANING OF THE FA CUP. Meanwhile, nobody was really all that upset when we sold Andros, by the end.
Winner: #12 We forgot the meaning of the FA Cup
#11 Wouldn't be the worst thing if we signed Theo Walcott vs. #3 Play the kids in Europa
The Europa meme is criminally underseeded. And it's not just restricted to Europa. Replace Europa with "Champions League group stage match against APOEL" or "League Cup Fourth Round" or "Aston Villa" and it's equally applicable. (Shhhh -- I wouldn't mind Walcott for the right price and a good health care plan)
Winner: #3 Play the kids in Europa
#7 Jermain Jenas was actually good vs. #2 Fourth place is better than a trophy
There's a lot to unpack here. The monetary rewards for qualifying for the Champions League are such that, practically speaking, it's more significant to the future of a club than any piece of domestic silverware barring the league title. And yet Spurs fans both love Cup wins and are on record mocking Arsene Wenger for saying this very thing. Wanna get in a heated argument at the pub? Bring this up. As for Jermain Jenas, he was good enough to get out of the first round, but not THAT good.
Winner: #2 Fourth place is better than a trophy
