Tottenham Hotspur opened their Champions League campaign in front of 85,000 people on Wednesday, and I think it’s safe to say that most of them would have liked things to go a bit differently. Spurs looked good, especially in the second half, but were undone by some early errors that Monaco managed to convert into goals.
Thomas Lemar who came on as a substitute was particularly good for the Monegasques as he assisted the opener and then scored to put the principality club up by two. Spurs threatened and had a number of good chances, but didn’t test Daniel Subasic nearly enough, firing several shots directly at the Monaco keeper.
All in all, it wasn’t a great result, but CSKA and Bayer Leverkusen wound up playing to a 2-2 draw, so the damage is somewhat mitigated. Tottenham are currently bottom of the group with a trip to Moscow coming in two weeks. I’m not going to say it’s a must win, but it’s close to being one.
