Tottenham Hotspur working to sign star defender to new deal

This would be double-plus good.

Lots and lots and lots of Tottenham Hotspur players have signed new contracts over the past 18 months, but the one star who has NOT yet done so is Toby Alderweireld. Now, that might soon change.

According to the Mail, Spurs are working to extend Toby to a new contract worth a reported £75k/week. Interestingly, the Mail also reports that Toby currently has a £25m release clause in his contract, something which is pretty unusual in English football. (You see them a lot in Spain.) However, that release clause is only triggered if Spurs extend an option in Toby’s contract until 2020, instead of offering him a new deal. So, I guess they’re offering him a new deal.

Contracts are complicated, and this is the Mail which adds another element of LOL to the mix. However, I would not be at all shocked if Spurs are indeed trying to lock town Alderweireld to a new contract, no matter what the circumstance. He’s one of the best central defenders in the Premier League, and Spurs rely heavily on him in their back line.

So as usual, I take this Mail report with an entire salt mine, but I’m also choosing to believe that there’s probably something behind this rumor. Hopefully it’s true, because I would like nothing better than for Spurs to keep the band together, especially in the back line.
