There’s unfortunate news regarding a Tottenham Hotspur former player. Spurs announced via their Twitter account that former club captain and legend Gary Mabbutt has been hospitalized after experiencing chest pains, and the Mirror has reported that he will undergo heart surgery later today.

Mabbutt played in both central defense and midfield for Tottenham during his sixteen year career at the club, scoring 27 goals in 477 appearances between 1982 and 1998. Mabbutt is frequently seen at Tottenham Hotspur matches and is one of the more beloved former players at Spurs. He was one of a number of Spurs luminaries who were recognized at the White Hart Lane closing ceremony in May.

He is also President of Tottenham Hotspur Ladies, who tweeted their support for him.

No other information about Mabbutt’s condition is available at this time, but obviously this is a very serious situation. We wish Gary the best and hope he’s able to recover swiftly and get back on his feet as soon as possible.
