Alderweireld: Tottenham have not offered me a new contract

But it sounds like it’s super not anything to worry about.

Remember all those furrowed brows from Spurs fans a few months ago when news reports emerged that there had been a breakdown in negotiations between Tottenham Hotspur and central defender Toby Alderweireld? Well, we can apparently forget all that.

Toby spoke to the footballing media ahead of Belgium’s World Cup qualification match this weekend, and said that there hasn’t been a breakdown in negotiations because Spurs have yet to offer Toby a new contract.

“No, there’s no talk now. [It’s] rumors. If there’s not talk then there’s no rejection as well. We’ll see in the future.”

No contract offer! Yikes! Sounds ominous, right? Not according to the Sky video report linked above. If that’s anything to go by, Toby’s completely happy at Spurs, Spurs feel the same, and that both sides would love to get a new deal in place eventually. Toby’s current contract runs until 2019, but with his status as arguably the best defender in the Premier League, he’s probably primed this summer for a substantial bump in pay, a new deal, and a photo with Mauricio Pochettino’s arm around his shoulder.

In other words, this is probably super not anything to worry about.

Toby also touched upon his PFA Team of the Season snub, and said that he’s taking it as motivation to get even better next season.

“Of course you always want to get some recognition, but I just look at last season, and especially the team’s season. The team did wonderful, and I’m a small part of it and I’m proud of it.

“It gives me some motivation to work harder and become a better player next season.”

It’s hard to imagine Toby getting a whole lot better at defending than he already is, but hey, if that’s what getting snubbed by the PFA does to him, I hope he gets snubbed every season.
