Tottenham Hotspur right back Kyle Walker is due to return to Spurs’ training ground tomorrow to begin preseason training, with no end in sight to the protracted transfer drama that’s linking him to Manchester City.
According to the Independent, both Walker and the man who just eclipsed him as Spurs’ starting right back, Kieran Trippier, are due to come back from a month’s vacation on Thursday, and while Walker’s ongoing transfer saga might have gotten an injection thanks to Dani Alves, it doesn’t look as though things are going to calm down anytime soon. Alves, another of Manchester City’s right back targets, recently decided to sign with PSG, and that has given Tottenham even more leverage as they seek a fee of at least £50m for Walker.
I’m sure Walker was hoping to have his transfer done by now so that he wouldn’t have to face his Tottenham teammates, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. Now he’ll return to the club to train alongside players that he could end up playing against during the upcoming International Champions Cup later on this month in the USA. Spurs are scheduled to fly to America next Wednesday.
Most people still expect this transfer to go through, but we already know that Daniel Levy is a tough negotiator, and with Alves out of the picture that makes Walker City’s top target and gives Levy even more reason to play hardball. It could be a while before any agreement goes through. In the mean time, if Spurs do sign Ricardo Pereira or another right back, that could signal their eventual intention, so we’ll keep tracking that part of the puzzle too as well.
