Kevin Wimmer has spent much of the past year on the bench for Tottenham Hotspur, and there have been numerous rumors that he’s ready to move on from North London. However, Spurs might not be ready to let him go.
There’s a report in the print edition of Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung (as reported by Sport Witness) that says Southampton submitted a €22m bid for the Austrian center back, but had its approach rejected by Tottenham.
It’s not surprising that Wimmer is the subject of inquiries and bids from other clubs, and it’s also not surprising that Spurs aren’t ready to let him go. Wimmer may be fourth on the CB depth chart behind Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, and Eric Dier, but without him Spurs are dangerously thin at that position, especially as Dier is employed just as often as a defensive midfielder and 19-year old Cameron Carter-Vickers is the only other first team center back on the roster.
There’s a fair amount of turmoil going on at Spurs right now with regards to transfers, but in this particular case I don’t see the point in additional subtraction before Tottenham have made some additions.
