The transfer of center back Davinson Sanchez from Ajax to Tottenham Hotspur continues to gather momentum. After news this morning that Sanchez was not with his teammates at the club hotel ahead of their Europa League qualifier, now the Evening Standard is reporting that Spurs and Ajax have reached a “deal in principle” for the transfer of the player that could eventually reach as high as £40m.

Tottenham may eventually pay close to £40m for the 21-year-old Colombia international, which would make him comfortably their record signing. The initial payment Ajax were seeking was thought to be about £27m.

There is talk that Sanchez is now en route to London for a physical and to complete his signing, and that the deal could happen soon. Sanchez would be Tottenham’s first signing of this summer transfer window, and would likely pave the way for Kevin Wimmer to depart the club to West Bromwich Albion.

Sanchez’s arrival means that Spurs could potentially field a back three comprised totally of former Ajax defenders — Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld also played for the Eredivisie club earlier in their careers, as did attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen.
