Much has been said already about Tottenham Hotspur’s injury woes leading up to Wednesday’s hugely anticipated match against Barcelona in the Champions League. However, Barca’s not exactly had the easiest time of it either.
Today the Catalan giants announced their 20-man traveling squad for the trip to Wembley stadium, and it’s missing two pretty important names. Center back Samuel Umtiti and right back Sergi Roberto are both injured and will miss the midweek match. (Umtiti would’ve missed the match even if he were healthy as he’s suspended after picking up a red against PSV.)
If you’re looking for some good news for Tottenham, that’s it. Barcelona have been a bit shaky defensively in the early part of this season even with Umtiti and Roberto, though they more than make up for it with their absolutely amazing offense. Still, if Spurs can hold off the likes of Leo Messi, Ousmane Dembele, Luis Suarez and Coutinho, they might be able to find a chink in Barca’s defensive armor and exploit it.
Since I (gasp) don’t watch a whole lot of Barcelona, I reached out to to Barca Blaugranes’ Renato Goncalves, to ask about possible replacements. According to Renato, Barca manager Ernesto Valverde will probably do a like-for-like replacement on Wednesday, meaning Clement Langlet will slot in for Umtiti and Nelson Semedo for Roberto.
In addition, former Spurs target Malcom, who signed with Barcelona this summer, was also left off of the traveling squad to face Tottenham. The 21-year old winger has found life difficult at the Nou Camp this season, making two substitute appearances for a total of 25’ of action thus far, though he had been out with an injury for a few weeks.
