Howdy, folks! The international break is what it is, but as far as friendly matches go this one is at least of interest to probably 90% of the readers of this blog. England take on USA in what will essentially be Wayne Rooney’s England international testimonial match.
There are several Tottenham players involved in this game — Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Kieran Trippier, and Harry Winks have all been called up for the Three Lions. But there’s a sixth player — Cameron Carter-Vickers (currently on loan at Swansea City) is a USA international, and is likely to play against at least some of his Spurs teammates today.
Gareth Southgate has already named Fabian Delph as captain for this match, which strongly suggests that both Harry Kane and Eric Dier will start on the bench, if not rested entirely. For USMNT fans, this is an opportunity to see what a young American football team, still rebuilding after their failure to qualify for last summer’s World Cup. This will also likely be one of the last matches for interim coach Dave Sarachan, who will likely make way for a new manager, probably Columbus Crew manager Gregg Berhalter.
