Juan Foyth wins Man of the Match in his first Argentina cap

That’s a good start!

Sporting a big bandage on his face and a devil-may-care attitude (probably), Juan Foyth made the best month of his professional football career even better on Friday night. The 20-year old Tottenham Hotspur center back made his first senior start for Argentina in a 2-0 friendly win over Mexico.

Foyth lined up alongside former Everton (now Villarreal) defender Ramiro Funes Mori and Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico in a back three, and helped La Albiceleste earn the clean sheet. (Note to Mauricio Pochettino: Foyth can play in a back three.)

There were doubts that Foyth would even play in this match after he collided with a teammate in training, sustaining a facial injury that required six stitches. Apparently he got the okay from Lionel Scaloni, and hopefully this is a sign of things to come. Foyth has also made his first career Tottenham start in the past few weeks, even scoring the match winner in Spurs’ 1-0 win over Crystal Palace. He’s had Juan impressive month!

Funes Mori and Isaac Brizuela scored the two goals for Argentina in the win. Two other Tottenham players were called up to the Argentina team — Erik Lamela was a late substitute, though keeper Paulo Gazzaniga did not make the matchday squad as the third keeper.
