Danny Rose just can’t help himself, can he? The outspoken Tottenham Hotspur left back is back in the headlines today with some more (cough) hot takes about his employer and the upcoming transfer window.
Speaking to the press and as reported in i News, Rose did two things simultaneously: he praised his manager Mauricio Pochettino and also cast doubt that Spurs would buy anyone in the January transfer window.
“It’s no secret all the teams have spent a lot more than what we have. [Mauricio Pochettino] did not make any signings in the summer and he is probably not going to make any signings in January.
“For him to do what he has done and what he is doing now speaks volumes of him. It’s no coincidence big teams are being linked with him. We hope he stays for a really long time.”
Okay, so those comments aren’t really that bad. Danny’s basically saying what the rest of have been saying for the past four months: despite not being backed in the summer transfer window, Poch has done remarkable things. And he has! It’s just the bit about the January window that’s ruffling a few feathers.
And it’s not like Rose is wrong. Pochettino rarely buys players in the January window, and when he does it’s been players like Dele Alli, whom Spurs promptly loaned back to MK Dons, or Lucas Moura, who barely played at all for the second half of last season. Usually, Poch is content to stand pat. It’s just that current Spurs players rarely talk about it so openly. But hey, it’s Danny — we’ve come to expect that from him.
However, there are signs that things could be different this time around. First, batting .000 in the summer may add a sense of urgency to things in January. Second, there are significant holes in the squad, and Pochettino knows it. Spurs are likely going to need to sell a few players before they can buy — Fernando Llorente, Mousa Dembele, Vincent Janssen, and George-Kevin N’Koudou have all been linked with exits — but it’s not at all out of the realm of possibility that Spurs could bring in a couple of new faces next month.
Rose went on to further praise his manager, echoing some of the comments that Harry Kane made about Poch just after the Barcelona match.
“It’s no coincidence every day you read Real Madrid want him or United want him. It’s exactly what he deserves. What he has done here in the last four or five years has been amazing. Not only for myself but the club.
“He has transformed how others think of us outside the club and he has transformed how we think of ourselves and how we approach big games. The belief he gives everybody is just amazing.”
It’s clear that Danny wants to keep Poch around. Hopefully with a few extra additions.
