If the potential summer sale of Toby Alderweireld away from Tottenham Hotspur is the shot, here’s the chaser. Former Fulham striker Leroy Rosenior was a guest on James Richardson’s podcast the Totally Football Show this week and made an intriguing and potentially very exciting claim — that the Cottagers have already reached a deal to sell exciting young star Ryan Sessegnon to Spurs this summer.
Here’s what Rosenior said to Richardson:
“[Sessegnon has] great potential. He’s one of those players who you think ‘Oh, he’s not a left back, but he’s not a left winger.’ He could be an amazing player.
I think that teams have been in for him. I think there’s a deal has been done for Ryan, a Premier League side. Rumors are Tottenham have been in. I wouldn’t be surprised if other sides have been in for him and said ‘Yeah, look, let’s do the deal.’ He’s stays at Fulham before moving in the summer.
“He’s got great focus. I do think people have put loads of deals towards him, so [Fulham] have got an idea. His future is already mapped out.”
Sessegnon has been a target for Tottenham for a long time now, and you probably recall that Spurs came very close to signing him from Fulham while he was still a schoolboy, before he signed his first professional contract with the Cottagers this past summer.
Sessegnon is considered one of, if not the, biggest English football talent of his generation. He’s been reportedly following the Gareth Bale development plan — he started off as a left back but has been playing almost exclusively at left wing since December in the Championship. His ceiling is limitless, and he has the potential to, like Dele Alli, take the Premier League by storm when he arrives.
Rosenior’s comments are pretty much the exact definition of ITK, so I’m not going to sit here and tell you that you can take this rumor to the bank. In fact, “strong rumors of Tottenham” isn’t exactly the most solid of statements. However, it’s not out of line to say that Rosenior probably has some inside information about Fulham, so it was enough to make me breath a little faster listening to him speak about Sessegnon and Spurs in the same sentence.
And if you want an ITK conspiracy theory, think of this: despite being only 17, it is going to command big-time money to pry Sessegnon away from Fulham. Perhaps not coincidentally, it is looking like Toby Alderweireld just might also command a rather large transfer fee this summer. Nobody wants to see Toby go, but trading in a 29-year old center back for one of the most promising teenagers in English football doesn’t seem like that bad of a deal.
Sessegnon isn’t going to be at Fulham forever, despite the Cottager’s current public comments to the contrary. Some big-time Premier League club is going to snatch him up. I’m not going to tell you to start believing in pundit ITK, but this is one rumor that I kind of hope turns out to be true.
