It’s looking more and more like Tottenham Hotspur are going to be returning to the United States this summer for the second consecutive preseason. Just a week after unconfirmed reports that Spurs will be playing AC Milan in Minneapolis sometime in July, we’re now also getting unconfirmed rumors that Tottenham will play Dortmund in Pittsburg on Wednesday, July 25.
The source of the info is World Soccer Talk, and while it’s unclear where they got their information, WST is pretty solid when it comes to rumors regarding preseason friendly locations in America. The bit about Tottenham is buried at the bottom of an article about a Dortmund vs. Liverpool friendly in Nashville on July 22.
The Spurs vs. Milan match is apparently part of the International Champions Cup, as is the Liverpool-Dortmund match. That suggests that Spurs-Dortmund might also be part of the competition, but it also may not be -- we just don’t have a whole lot of information yet. This would take place not long after the conclusion of the World Cup, so it’s reasonable to expect that, like with the Milan match, it will be a Spurs side devoid of some of its biggest stars. Don’t think that’s going to keep the Tottenham faithful away, though.
If confirmed, it would mark the first time that Spurs will have traveled to Pittsburgh — heck, it’s the first time I’ve heard of ANY European soccer teams playing in the Steel City. One would presume they’d have to be playing at Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, since I can’t imagine there’d be another soccer-compliant venue large enough to hold all the interested fans in town.
We’ll update this with additional information as we learn more, so don’t book your flights just yet.
