Borussia Dortmund interested in Tottenham’s Victor Wanyama

Consider me dubious.

You say you want a transfer rumor on this Wednesday before the World Cup? Buddy, I’ve got one for you. There are reports popping up all over Twitter that state that Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur’s Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama this summer, according to German paper SportBILD.

Weird, right? I thought so too. The article referenced isn’t actually on SportBild’s website, and it’s possible it’s only in the print edition, but I managed to find an unreadable screenshot of what is supposed to be that article on Twitter.

So if we use this Sport Witness article as a secondary source (lol), it states that Lucien Favre is working on overhauling Dortmund’s midfield, and that Wanyama could be a candidate. But only because “he’s not a regular starter at Tottenham.”

That’s technically true, I guess, but only because Wanyama missed half the season due to injury, lost his place to Eric Dier in the process, and never really ever got healthy again by the end of the season. In fact, it’s suggested that he played through a foot injury during Spurs’ last few matches because Spurs had an injury crisis in central midfield and he was one of the few senior midfielders available. If that’s the reason he’s now appearing in transfer rumors, well.

It’s not the first time that Wanyama has been included on a list players that Spurs might be interested in selling, but I have my doubts about this particular rumor. Dortmund already have Julian Weigel and Thomas Delaney, and Spurs are already facing the prospects of losing Mousa Dembele. Seems a big ask to sell another central midfielder without a very, very good plan for who’s coming in.

In short, I don’t buy it. But it’s Bat Country season, and I guess anything can happen?
