By the end of this match, Tottenham Hotspur may have a World Cup champion on its roster.

Oh sure, had England won it all they might have had FIVE World Cup champions, or three with Belgium. But here’s the thing: if France wins today over Croatia, Hugo Lloris — Tottenham club captain as well as France captain — will be the first player to lift the FIFA World Cup trophy as the confetti flies.

I won’t blame you if you decide to root for Croatia. They’re a great story. The second smallest country (after Uruguay) to play for a World Cup championship, and led by Luka Modric who is still beloved by many (but not all) Spurs supporters. In another circumstance, they’d be my team.

But then I remember Hugo. Sorry, Luka. Allez Les Bleus!

I had my doubts about this Russia tournament, but in terms of the play on the pitch it’s been pretty phenomenal, and without the portents of hooliganism and racism that had dogged the World Cup in the weeks leading up to it. So congratulations to Russia — you did it. Now please go teach Qatar how it’s done, because I’m worried.

Enjoy the World Cup final!
