It’s contract extension day at Tottenham Hotspur! Erik Lamela has become the second player in 24 hours to pen a new deal in North London, signing a new four year deal that will keep him at Spurs until 2022!

Spurs may not have made any new signings, but they’re doing a great job locking down the players that they do have to longer term deals. This one makes me super excited. After a disastrous spell that saw him miss a full year of action with two bad hips, Erik stormed back to action in the second half of last season. The club had previously triggered a one year extension to his existing deal, probably as a safeguard to make sure that his legs hadn’t fallen off after surgery, but there have been rumors for a little while now that he was set to extend his stay.

The official communication from the club did not mention anything about Lamela’s wages, but one can surmise he’s gotten a healthy bump from the ~£68k that he was on previously.

Having a healthy Lamela back is so nice. He’s a player that (still) divides Spurs fans, but you can’t fault his work ethic, and he’s a monster in Pochettino’s press. He can play pretty much anywhere across the forward attacking band and you have to think that this new contract means that he’s going to have a massive role in Spurs’ offense this season. Plus, he’s a right s—t-kicking bastard on the pitch, which is a role that he delights in playing and to great effect. I love him so much.

Congratulations to Erik, and COYS!
