Tottenham release 25-man squad for American preseason tour

As always, the interest lies in who DIDN’T make the plane.

Tottenham Hotspur are currently on their way to USA! The club released the 25-man list of players who are accompanying Mauricio Pochettino and his staff to America to participate in a preseason tour and three friendly matches in the International Champions Cup.

And here they are!

With the Belgian and England World Cup stars still being rested, we expected a squad heavy on development and youth squad players, and that’s exactly what we got.Luke Amos and Anthony Georgiou both make their second consecutive preseason tour squads, and youth keepers Alfie Whiteman and Brandon Austin both are on the plane as well. Also, American fans will get to see players such as defender TJ Eyoma and highly rated young midfielder Oliver Skipp. Striker Kazaiah Sterling made the plane as well.

As for World Cup stars, Christian Eriksen returned to Hotspur Way yesterday and is on the plane, as is Son Heung-Min and Davinson Sanchez. Harry Kane, Dele Alli & co. get a well-deserved rest.

As is usually the case in lists such as this one, the intrigue is as much who DIDN’T make the plane as who did. Most notably, Vincent Janssen is absent, which lends further suggestions that he is off to Fenerbahce, either on loan or permanently. Likewise, there wasn’t a seat on the plane for Marcus Edwards, whose Spurs future is in doubt. There are also a bunch of development squad players missing: Tom Glover, Shayon Harrison, Samuel Shashoua, Jack Roles, and Reo Griffiths are also not going.

Perhaps most interestingly, Josh Onomah is missing. In fact, we haven’t seen Joshy all preseason, which is odd. There are some online who are wondering whether he might be part of a deal with Aston Villa that will help grease the wheels for bringing Jack Grealish, but this is all speculation.

There’s also a photo of several players on the literal plane to the United States and yep that sure looks like first class. Gotta wonder who gets the good reclining seats and who gets stuck in economy class.

Spurs play their first preseason match this coming Wednesday against Roma in San Diego, before traveling to Pasadena to face Barcelona and Minneapolis to play AC Milan.
