It’s a ... goal?

It took less than 10 minutes into the new Premier League season for Tottenham Hotspur to find the back of the net. Jan Vertonghen is the answer to the trivia question of who scored the first goal against Newcastle United at the start of the 2018-19 season.

The Belgian defender’s opening strike of the campaign won’t ever show up on any highlight reels, but it counts nonetheless. Take a look at this madness:

Off a corner kick, a Christian Eriksen’s always delightful service found the head of Davinson Sanchez who nodded an effort towards goal. Vertonghen got on the end of it with a brave header in traffic and the ball just was pushed off the line by Newcastle’s goalkeeper. After a few seconds of confusion and appeals, the referee’s wristwatch informed him that goal line technology had ruled it a goal.

It crossed the line by this much:

It wasn’t exactly the dream goal you go to bed thinking about before a season starts, but it’s how this year starts.
