Hidden trophies.

Hello, everyone!

Thanks to those of you who gave me some recommendations for my upcoming vacation. I appreciate the help!

Ramble of the Day

You probably looked at the lead image of today’s Hoddle and wondered why Michel Vorm is dramatically posing with a trophy. Then you probably asked yourself, Where did that trophy come from? And why does Pardeep keep rambling about trophies? I apologize for that, but let me get to those other questions, because I also had these questions.

When I pick a lead image, a small caption also appears, so I looked at that for my answers and read this:

GIRONA, SPAIN - AUGUST 04: Michel Vorm of Tottenham Hotspur holds a second place trophy at the end of the pre-season friendly match between Girona and Tottenham Hotspur at Municipal de Montilivi Stadium on August 4, 2018 in Girona, Spain.

...So you’re telling me the preseason friendly against Girona was technically a contest for a trophy of some sort?

I will be honest: I did not watch this match because I was working on another story for another publication, so I did not have the chance. I kept my eyes on Twitter and the Cartilage Free Captain writers’ room, but I did not find out about this trophy thing.

For what it’s worth, Girona won the first place trophy, and looked somewhat pleased to do so.

(For what it’s worth: Despite the name of the trophy being right there, Getty did not label these images with “Costa Brava Trophy.” They just said these trophies came after a preseason game. This trophy basically does not exist, even after a Google search.)

There is seemingly no other photographic evidence that this trophy ceremony happened. There was not even the stupid fanfare that surrounds preseason trophies. It’s as if the whole thing...doesn’t exist.

Also, since I’ve been on the topic of trophy design for the last few weeks, I will offer up a few more opinions. The trophies are pretty good for a tournament that no one cares about, though I have quibbles. The design is way too obvious. It’s just a ball with some sort of basic “stand” element to it. Additionally, I feel they did not do enough to make the losers’ trophy to seem inferior. From the looks of it, it’s a little bit smaller, when it should be significantly smaller.

In all honesty, though, there should not be a losers’ trophy at all, or a winners’ trophy. I did not expect to get so bold today, but here I go: Just disband preseason trophies altogether. If you choose not to, accept that your preseason trophy is something I will laugh at.

tl;dr: Did you know Tottenham collected another trophy during preseason?
