South Korea’s U23 squad came into today’s Asian Games match against Kyrgyzstan knowing that thanks to an extremely football’d loss to Malaysia they’d need at least a draw to secure escaping their group. They got more than that, thanks to the best player at the tournament and the best player in Asia. Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-Min scored the match’s only goal to fire South Korea into the knockouts in a 1-0 win.
If you’re wondering how Sonny scored that goal, well, we have video thanks to @IndiaSpurs
Soooooooo yeah, Sonny’s not going to get a goal that’s much easier than that one. I understand it’s U23 AFC football, but yikes, someone dun screwed up if Sonny’s that wide open at the back post. Good finish, too.
South Korea’s march to the Asian Games title and a military exemption for the entire squad continues on Thursday as the Taeguk Warriors face Iran in the first round of the knock-out stages. The Iranians finished on top of their group with four points — a win over North Korea, a loss to Myanmar, and a scoreless draw with Saudi Arabia.
The table also sets up Korea for a potential Gold Medal game against fellow title contenders Japan, assuming both make it that far. Korea’s toughest opponent might be Vietnam, who blazed through the group stages undefeated, and who Sonny & Co. could face in the semifinals.
