Whoa! Here’s a rumor for you. Sky Sports Understands™ that Tottenham Hotspur are currently in negotiations with Bundesliga club Schalke for the season-long loan of Danny Rose.
I... I mean... THIS MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE. The idea of loaning Rose (presumably as a preamble to selling him this summer) suggests that you think that a) Danny has burned too many of his bridges to make his continued stay at Hotspur Way tenable, or b) Kyle Walker-Peters played out of position on the left is better than Rose.
The former is at least slightly understandable, but would still mean that there’s been a significant shift in relations between Rose and Mauricio Pochettino — Rose was known around the club as “the gaffer’s son” when he first arrived, and Danny can attribute his rise to the England squad to Poch’s coaching.
But the latter is even weirder. Without Rose, Spurs no longer have a pacy, direct wingback option — Ben Davies is fine, but he doesn’t have the same skill set that Danny brings, nor does KWP, who didn’t exactly set the pitch on fire in the preseason.
Also, shipping off Danny means that we’re down yet another association-trained player, especially if the Grealish transfer is indeed off.
I guess there’d be a couple of more out there theories: perhaps Danny himself wants to leave. He said he wanted to play “north” — is Schalke geographically to the north of London? Or maybe WE’RE GONNA MAKE A LAST-MINUTE SWOOP FOR RYAN SESSEGNON HOLD ON TO YOUR HATS.
I don’t know, y’all. I got nothing on this one. Bizarre.
