Tottenham Hotspur Women lost one of its starting midfielders today. Liverpool announced that they have signed 31-year old midfielder Rachel Furness after Reading recalled her from her season-long loan at Spurs, according to an official announcement on the Liverpool website. Furness said she’s excited to join the Reds on a permanent transfer.

“I’m really excited to have signed for Liverpool, it’s such a massive club and I can’t wait to get going.

“There’s such a talented squad here. The league position at the moment isn’t what they’d like but I can see the talent in the squad and I’m hoping to add to that and help the Reds move up the table.

“I can’t wait to get started, I just want to hit the ground running and bounce into that first game on January 5.”

This is a pretty substantial loss for Tottenham. Furness was an established member of the first team at Spurs, having started nine of ten league matches and 11 total matches in all competitions, scoring one goal. She’s leaving a Tottenham side that has already exceeded expectations in their first season in the Women’s Super League and heading to a Liverpool team that has yet to win a game and is at the bottom of the table.

Furness’ departure likely opens up opportunities for Coral-Jade Haines and Josie Green, who will likely push each other for the open starting role in midfield.

Tottenham’s next match is January 5, 2020 when they host WSL power Manchester City at the Hive.
