File this under “Of course he did.” After a phenomenal performance in Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-0 victory over Dortmund on Wednesday night, Spurs’ Jan Vertonghen was named UEFA Champions League Player of the Week today. Spurs made the announcement via social media.

Super Jan was sublime on Wednesday night, firing in an assist for Son Heung-Min’s volley early in the second half before scoring himself with a poacher’s finish from a gorgeous Serge Aurier ball after making a late run into the box. He also had 4 successful take-ons and was solid on both sides of the pitch, despite playing “out of position” as an emergency left back, a role he has filled on numerous past occasions both with Spurs and Belgium.
Vertonghen was rightfully praised by pundits and fans alike for his performance on the evening, even as most supporters would rather see him slot back into central defense going forward. It’s not, however, hyperbole to suggest that Jan was the best player on the pitch at Wembley on Wednesday night.
Vertonghen beat out Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo, PSG midfielder Marco Verratti, and Real Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois. It’s a well-deserved honor for Jan!
