The summer transfer window opens on July 1, and by all indications Tottenham Hotspur have a lot to do when it does. One of the most important concerns (aside from the midfield) is to do something to fix the fullback situation, which has been... um, let’s just call it “not great.”
In order to bring new fullbacks in, someone’s going to have to go. And according to France Football, that someone is Serge Aurier. France Football (via Sport Witness) has a short update in their print edition today that says that Spurs are willing to sell the Ivorian fullback when the window opens this summer, and that Aurier might be in “his last weeks” at the club.
Aurier came into Spurs with a troubled past but was expected to waltz into the starting lineup at the right back position. Instead, he has stagnated, and rumors of him departing the club aren’t at all surprising. Interestingly, even if Aurier does leave this summer, Spurs still have two right backs on the roster — Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker-Peters. An Aurier departure might mean that KWP is set to finally get his chance as a rotation option in Spurs’ lineup, or there might be future links to other incoming RBs. It’s too soon to say.
This is nothing close to being a substantial story — it’s early, it’s ephemeral, and it’s just a note saying Spurs are ready to cut bait on Serge. But it’s most certainly plausible, as fullbacks are high on the list of things that Spurs need to address if they want to improve next season. Roll on transfer rumors!
