Watch out, Mexico — your league is about to get 100% more thicc. According to football.london, those weird links between Tottenham Hotspur and Liga MX side CF Monterrey for the transfer of Vincent Janssen weren’t fictional at all, and the Dutch striker is set for the CONCACAF Champions League winners. A medical is set in Europe on Monday, and the deal is expected to be completed in a couple of days.
There’s no indication what the transfer fee for Janssen will be, nor what he might command from Monterrey in wages. I doubt either number is that much. After signing him for £17m from AZ Alkmaar, Janssen has spent the past two seasons either out on loan or at the fringes of the Tottenham squad, and Spurs have been trying to offload him for at least that long. If I had to guess, I’d say Spurs will probably get some figure in the high single digit millions for him.
We mentioned before that Monterrey might just be a good place to get his career back on track. Monterrey is a HUGE club in Mexico, one of the biggest in Liga MX, and are almost always competitive in the league. If he signs, Janssen would be the only European — indeed, the only player not from North, South, or Central America — on the Monterrey roster.
I’ll miss making thicc jokes at his expense, but in all seriousness it’s beyond time that Janssen moved on to a healthier situation than what he’s experienced in North London. I hope he’s able to get his career kick-started by scoring a bunch of goals (with his ass) in Nueva Leon.
