The second round of the Carabao Cup wrapped up today in locations all over England, and the draw for the third round started immediately afterward. Tottenham Hotspur now know their opponents — they were drawn away to Colchester United!

If you’re like me and enjoy the early rounds of cup competitions, this one is a great draw. Spurs will travel to Essex to face a League Two opponent on their turf, and an opponent that already has one upset on their resume in this competition. Colchester downed a pretty full-strength Crystal Palace side at Selhurst Park yesterday, winning in penalty kicks. That may say more about Palace than it does about the U’s — it’s early days but they’re currently 17th in the League 2 table.
Even so, avoiding Premier League opponents in the early rounds of cup competitions is always nice, and it’s also cool to visit and play in lower-league stadiums. This looks like a prime match to run out players like Troy Parrott for some real match minutes.
The match will be played on September 23.
Unfortunately, there weren’t any really super tasty matchups for anyone this round. Here’s the full draw results.
