Ironically, the best Tottenham Hotspur has looked in a few weeks came in a loss. Saturday’s defeat against Liverpool felt a bit like a missed opportunity, but it should be something that the team can build from going forward. At this point, even moral victories might count for something, as everything has felt like a struggle since the end of November.
Tuesday Spurs get a rematch against Middlesbrough in the Third Round of the FA Cup. After drawing 1-1 last week, the teams will meet again for the replay in London for an opportunity to play against Southampton in the Fourth Round later this month. Of course, Tottenham recently dropped points away to the Saints on New Year’s Day, but one thing at a time…
Boro still sit in the bottom half of the Championship table, and at home Tottenham should be able to take the tie. Spurs were the better side in the initial fixture, but they could not turn their possession and opportunities into many goals. Second half substitutions to bring on Erik Lamela and Giovani Lo Celso seemed to make a difference last time, but Jose Mourinho has been reluctant to make these sort of changes to the starting XI.
As always, adding another match to a busy past month and a half is never a good thing, and Mourhino’s interest towards cup competitions makes heavy rotation unlikely. Looking at everything glass half full, though, this could be a chance for the team to continue to carry some momentum forward from the weekend and help the manager finally make the right lineup decisions.

Match thread rules
The match thread rules are the same as always. To any visitors coming here for the first time, welcome! We’re glad you’re here! Wipe your feet, mind the gap, and be sure to check out the other pages at this outstanding site. While you’re here, though, we have a few rules and regulations:
- Absolutely no links to illegal streams. They’re bad and they get us in trouble. Violators will be warned or banned.
- We have rules against “relentless negativity.” Nobody likes a Negative Nancy. Don’t knee-jerk and post outlandish or hurtful things just because you’re frustrated.
- Along those lines, outright abuse of players or match officials is also not allowed. It’s fine to say “wow, that was a really bad call,” but it’s NOT okay to direct copious amounts of abuse in the direction of said official over a call you did not like.
- Treat other people in the match thread the way you would want someone else to treat your grandmother. Be nice. Observe Wheaton’s Law. This is a community of fans, not an un-moderated message board.
- NO SPIDERS!!
- Finally, while we don’t have a rule against profanity, please try and keep the naughty words in check. Also, language that is sexist, racist, or homophobic in nature will be swiftly deleted and you will be immediately banned. This is an open, supportive community.
Have fun, and COYS!
