Christian Eriksen is leaving Tottenham Hotspur one way or another, that much is certain. The only real questions that remain are to which team he’s going, when, and how much (if any) Spurs are going to get for him in return.
However, if one Danish newspaper is correct, there’s a distinct possibility the answer to those questions are “Inter Milan,” “this month,” and “around £15m.” Ekstra Bladet is out with a report suggesting that a deal is very close between Spurs and Inter for the January full transfer of Eriksen, and that an agreement could be reached within a couple of weeks.
The original Eriksen-to-Inter rumors started with Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, which itself makes it pretty credible. Ekstra Bladet is basically Eriksen’s “home paper” and they are usually on the front lines when it comes to Danish footballers and their various transfers. The report suggests a possible transfer fee of between 150-180 DKK (about £17-20m), which frankly sounds pretty good to me.
Spurs are in a weak negotiating position, with Eriksen free to sign a pre-contract with any club he wishes now, with a free transfer in the summer. But if he’s tired of life in London and wants out now, then it behooves everyone to find a deal that’s somewhat equitable.
Inter isn’t Real Madrid, Barcelona, or PSG, but it’s a change of scenery and a club that is very likely to be playing Champions League football next season and are currently challenging Juventus for the Serie A title. I don’t know if this will actually be something that happens or not, but at this point getting ANYTHING in return for Eriksen seems like a net positive for Tottenham.
