My new least favorite character

Hi, everyone!

At the top today is forward Angela Addison, who’s now in her third season with the club.

Ramble of the Day

Last year, I told you a long standing truth about me: the fictional character I have liked the least was the devious sister on Drake & Josh, Megan Parker. That changed, though, when I started watching Derry Girls (which you should absolutely watch if you haven’t). That special place is now reserved for Jenny Joyce.

Jenny is a classmate of the titular Derry girls who is an absolute suck-up, but that only scratches the surface of what makes her unbearable. The above is a nine-minute video that maybe you don’t want to watch, but here are some of the highlights:

  • she is beyond corny, once describing a student as a seed and the school as its soil during a school assembly
  • she had a visiting Ukrainian student on a leash because “he kept wandering off”
  • she sings far too much for her classmates in these school assemblies, and isn’t very good which makes me wonder why she ends up in that venue as frequently as she does
  • she once encouraged her classmates to dip into their trust funds for a trip to Paris, assuming incorrectly that they had some, and speaking French in a cringeworthy manner during the conversation

The normal reaction is to laugh — I watched the video with my sister while writing the Hoddle and she laughed — but I couldn’t help but channel Michelle, the most outspoke of the main group, at multiple points during that video.

It’s not that Jenny isn’t funny. In fact, I have to give all the credit in the world to the Derry Girls writers and the actress who played Jenny, Leah O’Rourke, for perfectly creating this beyond annoying character. Jenny is the perfect combination of entitlement and cringe, the worst type of teacher’s pet that makes her unlikable to Sister Michael and her classmates, outside of one friend who seems to be her permanent second fiddle. She gets worse as the show goes on, too; I don’t find that the first clip in that video captures her specific brand of terrible as well as literally every one after it.

tl;dr: I despise Derry Girls’ Jenny Joyce more than any other fictional character I’ve run into.
