Juan Foyth is going out on loan to Villarreal

This seems to make sense for everyone involved.

Juan Foyth is going to get some playing time, but it will not be for Tottenham Hotspur this season.

According to Fabrizio Romano and Charlie Eccleshare, the Argentine defender is off to sunny Spain on a one year loan with La Liga side Villarreal.

Both Romano and Eccleshare are reporting the same details of the loan. Villarreal have agreed to a one year loan with a €15m purchase option at the end. There is no word of any triggers that would turn it into an obligation to buy, and given the reporters involved, our guess is that there are none. Villarreal will also pay 100% of Foyth’s wages, though that’s not much of a concern as he’s only on £21,000/week.

As Eccleshare mentioned in his tweet, it just hasn’t worked out for Foyth at Tottenham. He’s shown promise in spot starts, but also showed his inexperience at times and was prone to making a mistake. The argument there is that he needed more playing time to learn, but that’s a tall order when a club is trying to lock down Champions League year in and year out.

This deal makes a ton of sense for everyone. It’s clear Foyth is not in Mourinho’s plans and Spurs need to make a little room on their foreign player list. Foyth wants game time and Villarreal have a strong need for a defender. Everyone seems to come out ahead in this deal.

Spurs aren’t done yet this window. They need to clear out one more foreign player spot and possibly two if they’re still going hard for Skirinar. That looks like it will come down to deadline day. Expect a busy weekend!
