As expected, Juan Foyth will be playing football elsewhere this season. Sunday morning, Tottenham Hotspur announced that the young Argentine defender will be heading to La Liga side Villarreal on loan for the entirety of the 2020-21 season. But there’s a surprise in there too!
Juan Foyth has signed a new contract with the Club until 2023 and joined Spanish side Villarreal on loan for the remainder of the 2020/21 season.

Foyth hasn’t been in Jose Mourinho’s plans this season (and may not ever be) so it’s a surprise that Foyth agreed to extend his Tottenham contract by a further year before heading out on loan. Maybe it’s a hedge, in case Foyth has a good season and develops into a player that Mourinho can rely on. That would seem to contradict prior reports that there’s a €15m optional purchase clause in his loan contract. But whatever.
I wish Mourinho had given Foyth more of a chance, but we always knew he was a player with immense talent but the ability to produce a howler in the box every so often. Maybe a season at Villarreal can drill some of that out of him.
