For weeks Tottenham Hotspur fans have been eagerly anticipating a contract extension from one of its players that would keep them at the club for the foreseeable future.

This is not the one we were thinking of. (That was Son Heung-Min, whose new deal is still coming as far as we know.) But this is still pretty good! Spurs announced on social media today that 19 year old academy graduate and midfielder Harvey White has signed a new deal at the club through the 2024 season.

White is the latest in a string of young central midfielders who have come into the first team through the academy. That started all the way back with Nabil Bentaleb, Ryan Mason, and Tom Carroll, and continued more recently with Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp. Now it’s White’s turn to hitch his car to the hype train.

Can we say that White is destined for greatness? Nope! It’s still too early. White is only 19 and has just 8 minutes of senior competition under his belt, a late cameo in the 4-0 drubbing of Ludogorets in November. However, the fact that he GOT that club debut is significant in and of itself, and he’s clearly well regarded by Jose Mourinho and the coaching staff.

It’s super fun to dream on academy graduates, and we can certainly do that with White as we have with Skipp this season. That said, it’s likely going to take a couple of years and maybe some loans before we even come close to seeing White as an integral member of Spurs’ first team rotation, if we ever do. And that’s okay! He has talent and promise, and for now that’s more than enough.
