RB Leipzig joke about Timo Werner heading to Spurs on Twitter

It’s not happening. Don’t get your hopes up.

Let’s get this out of the way first thing: Timo Werner is almost certainly not heading to Tottenham Hotspur, and no, his current club RB Leipzig has not confirmed it.

The Bundesliga title challengers responded to a known transfer transfer rumor troll on Twitter that indicated that Werner was attracting interest from Liverpool, and joked (yes, joked) that they “heared” that the German striker was heading to Spurs instead.

I hate doing this but there are people on the internet that are taking this tweet seriously and are now convinced that Timo will be joining Tottenham this summer. Nothing is impossible, but the odds of this happening are ludicrously low, despite Spurs tracking Timo for years.

Werner is 23 and one of the hottest commodities in Europe at the moment. He’s expressed an openness to playing in England (his exact words were “I am open to everything”) and there are unconfirmed rumors in BILD that he has a €60m release clause in his Leipzig contract.

First, there’s the pesky Harry Kane issue which has prevented Spurs from signing a decent second striker for years now. That’s not going away, and it’s hard to imagine Werner heading to a place where he’s not guaranteed to be the main man in any club’s attack.

Second, even if the €60m release clause is true, that’s cheap enough that Werner is going to attract some serious attention from clubs that, even with the new stadium money, are going to blow Spurs away with the wages they offer.

Third, come on, just look at that tweet, they’re OBVIOUSLY joking.

So sure, Timo’s great and I’d totally have him at Spurs and would love to look like an idiot this summer if he signs. But like, don’t use this tweet as evidence, because it’s not evidence. It’s a football #brand attempting humor.
