This is a public service announcement.

With the coronavirus and its accompanying illness COVID-19 still spreading across the globe, it’s perhaps inevitable that Tottenham Hotspur starts getting into information awareness.

One of the best ways to prevent the spread of the virus is to practice good hygiene, including washing your hands frequently and VERY well. midfielder Moussa Sissoko got into it today, posting a video on his Instagram stories of him washing his hands that was eventually released on Tottenham’s twitter feed, and challenging his friends and fellow footballers Serge Aurier, Steve Mandala, and Cheikh M’Bengue to post their own videos.

So that’s a great video and helps to raise the awareness of the importance of hand-washing in this day and age. It’s also mostly wrong, and you should do better.

According to the CDC, you should be washing your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, and scrubbing every part of your hands and wrists, including under your fingernails. Sissoko does pay attention to the areas between your fingers, but the total time of washing is less than ten seconds, and THAT’S JUST NOT GONNA CUT IT MOUSSA, BE BETTER.

For those of you with hand sanitizer, that will work in a pinch, but know that soap and water is more effective, and it should be plentiful. Any soap will do, it doesn’t need to be antibacterial. The CDC also recommends that you wash your hands in the following situations:

  • Before, during, and after preparing food
  • Before eating food
  • Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick with vomiting or diarrhea
  • Before and after treating a cut or wound
  • After using the toilet
  • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
  • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
  • After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste
  • After handling pet food or pet treats
  • After touching garbage

Moussa’s doing everyone a service here and I’m not going to be too hard on him, but it’d be awesome if Spurs fans replied with their own videos displaying proper hand washing technique and encouraging Sissoko to up his game. After all, he’s still not back on the playing pitch so he should have plenty of time to practice!

Keep those paws clean and stay safe, everyone!
