Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace wasn’t just the final match of the 2019-20 season — it was also the final match in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt by two long-time members of the squad. Central defender Jan Vertonghen and keeper Michel Vorm’s contracts officially expired with the full time whistle, and both will be leaving the club for new opportunities next season.
For Vorm, it’s the second time he’s left in as many seasons, but he was re-signed on a short term contract after the injury to Hugo Lloris at the start of the campaign. Vertonghen’s departure is sadder, as he’s been a stalwart member of the starting XI since he signed from Ajax back in 2012.
Certain segments of Spurs fandom had been holding out hope that Jan might? Maybe? Perhaps? turn things around and sign a new deal that will keep him at Spurs for longer, but Harry Winks seemed to throw water on that with his photo tribute to both Vertonghen and Vorm on Instagram.
Yeah, seriously, this just makes me very sad.
Vertonghen hasn’t confirmed his departure or where he may be heading next, but Vorm has tweeted out his (second) farewells, and it sounds like he doesn’t anticipate coming back for a third stint.
Many amazing memories with this team. Will miss everyone involved at the club. Thanks to everyone at @SpursOfficial pic.twitter.com/3j2b2YVQgy

Vaya con Dios, Jan and Michel. You gave us some good memories. I’m going to go have a good cry now.
