Tottenham Hotspur Women have been back in preseason training for a couple of weeks now, which is fantastic. However, until today we still didn’t know how, when, or even if, the new Women’s Super League season was going to start.
Now we do. According to a post on the Chelsea Women website, the new WSL season is set to kick off on the weekend of September 5-6. The Super League also teased the new season by announcing the date by which they will release the new WSL schedule: August 7, 2020.

There are still a lot of questions, starting with whether WSL clubs will be able to have fans in the stadiums for matches, or whether, like in the men’s game, they will need to play behind closed doors. That could be a problem for many clubs — while women’s clubs aren’t as reliant on matchday income as some on the men’s side, probably because while rising, attendance still isn’t great, not having ANY income coming in at all is going to make it hard for clubs to balance the books. Maybe there will be guidance forthcoming about fans in the stadiums and social distancing, but we just don’t know for now.
Regardless, mark your calendars. Tottenham Hotspur Women will be embarking on their sophomore season in the top flight in early September, and hopefully they can improve on their performance in 2019-20.
