Romano — Jan Vertonghen to sign with Benfica

It’s not the Roma move we all wanted, but Super Jan will land on his feet.

Ever since he left the club, Tottenham Hotspur fans have been wondering where Jan Vertonghen will end up. Now according to Fabrizio Romano, we’re pretty sure we know. Romano tweeted today that a deal has been completed that will have Super Jan head to Portugal to sign with Liga NOS side Benfica in a three year deal.

It’s okay to admit it if, like me, you secretly wanted Jan to move to Italy and sign with a club like Roma. (I even told myself I’d buy a Roma Vertonghen kit.) But Benfica’s a pretty good place to land for him — he gets to live in Lisbon, a great city, and will be joining a side that regularly competes for titles and plays in Europe. This past season, Benfica finished second in the table behind Porto, meaning they qualified for the Champions League in the qualification playoff stages. That’s better than Spurs!

As an aside, Fabrizio also seems to think that the Inter interest in Tanguy Ndombele is still a thing, but we might have to wait until the end of the window for any potential reconciliation. I still have my doubts. But anyway.

It’s always going to be weird seeing Jan play in a shirt that isn’t either Tottenham or Ajax, so this will get some getting used to, but I can think of a lot worse clubs for Super Jan than Benfica. At least he’ll enter the twilight years of his career at a club still playing at the highest levels of European football. Hopefully Benfica can also #GetJanAGoal.
