Jack Clarke is probably like a number of other young wingers at Tottenham Hotspur — staring at the incoming Gareth Bale and realizing that he’s not going to get many opportunities at Spurs this season. That’s why the 19-year old is looking likely to head out on loan again this season, and probably back to the Championship where he spent the entirety of last year.
Birmingham Live is now reporting that Clarke is a loan target for Birmingham City as they look to completely revamp their squad. Manager Aitor Karanka has already brought in 8 new players at City, and is said to want to loan Clarke as the ninth.
Clarke was an active part of Tottenham’s preseason friendly matches, and got a significant number of minutes against Championship caliber opposition. He looked pretty lively at times and with promise, but not anywhere near Premier League level — which is fine at age 19! His past loans to the Championship have been mixed; he was stuck as the odd loanee out at Leeds in the first half of the season and then got spot minutes in six appearances at QPR in the spring around the COVID shutdown.
Birmingham Live says he’ll compete for minutes at Birmingham City with free agent signing Ivan Sanchez and Jonathan Leko, whom City signed for around £1m from West Brom.
Not a done deal yet by any means, but we’ll keep an eye on it. Clarke is at the age where if he’s going to make a leap he needs significant minutes. He didn’t get them at either Leeds or QPR last season; hopefully he’ll get them in Birmingham, should the loan materialize.
