Some very interesting transfer information just dropped today, hours ahead of Spurs’ match against Brighton. According to The Athletic (£), West Brom are interested in bringing in Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga on loan through the end of the season.
The report is paywalled, but says that the Baggies are close to a deal to bring in Celta Vigo midfielder Okay Yokuslu with one of their remaining loans, and they could end up targeting Tanganga with their final domestic loan. Japhet isn’t the only player on their list, but he’s one that would quite likely be available.
This is far from confirmed, but it’d actually be a pretty good situation for Tanganga. He’s been hobbled by injuries that have kind of derailed his season, and he’s fallen down the pecking order at Spurs to the point where Joe Rodon is more likely to be selected than him. West Brom’s defense is pretty awful, so he’d likely get a bunch of Premier League minutes, and that can only be a good thing for his development. Tanganga’s usefulness both as a CB and as a right back would probably also make him valuable, though his future is likely going to be as a central defender rather than as a RB.
The transfer deadline is on Monday, so if this is going to happen it won’t be long before we know one way or the other. While it’s nice to have Tanganga around for Europa League depth, we’re past (most) of the easy opponents now, and his playing time is likely going to dry up even further. I’m not opposed to this if it were to happen.
