Anna Filbey leaves Spurs Women for Celtic loan

Squeezed out of Spurs’ lineup, Filbey is hoping to get minutes elsewhere this season.

The news of this didn’t emerge until today, but there’s one more outgoing Tottenham Hotspur Women player to talk about in the January transfer window. Spurs’ utility defender Anna Filbey is heading out on loan to Celtic for the remainder of the season.

Filbey was one of Karen Hills’ & Juan Amoros’ rocks in the back line last season, with 1152 minutes almost all as a center back. This year, with the addition of Kerys Harrop, she’s seen her minutes drastically reduced, down to just 238 league minutes, and only one match since Rehanne Skinner took over. With the addition of England international Abbie McManus on loan for the rest of the season, the writing is clearly on the wall for Filbey.

I honestly couldn’t tell you much about the Scottish Women’s Premier League, which is where Filbey is heading. A look at the table shows Celtic in third, two points behind Rangers and Glasgow City. Hopefully she’ll be able to get some quality minutes there, and either find a way to work herself back into contention at Spurs, or find a new club that will play her.

Good luck, Anna!
