Almost as if on cue, now that a manager appointment looks to be close finalized the wilds of bat country have opened like the gates of Hell, and Tottenham Hotspur transfer rumors are once again emerging. And they’re not all from Italy! Take this one — The Telegraph is suggesting that Harry Winks might be a transfer target for none other than Aston Villa.

It’s true, though it’s not exactly a FIRM source. Mike McGrath, in what is basically a transfer rumor roundup article, that Winks is among a number of targets for Villa to reinforce their midfield options, including James Ward-Prowse, Dwight McNeil, and Todd Cantwell. These come amongst rumors that other, bigger clubs are ready to snap up some of their established stars like Jack Grealish (linked with Manchester City) and John McGinn (linked with Liverpool). Villa has already lined up the transfer of winger Emi Buendia from Norwich City.

There’s no indication about any kind of price for Winks, and there’s not a whole lot of THERE there at all, but it’s the first time I’ve seen any kind of rumor linking him away from Spurs, so it feels a bit like something has shifted in the narrative. Winks was clearly unhappy last season with his amount of playing time and there were even murmurs that he was one of the disgruntled players leaking information to the media in the last days of Mourinho.

Look, we joke a lot about Winks on this site, but there’s a not crazy option that he’d be a serviceable option at a club like Villa. Plus considering he’s homegrown and English he’d likely command a pretty good inflated fee as well. I’m all for this. Let’s wish this into existence.
