The United States reserves played like...well, the reserve team last Sunday against Haiti. After an early goal by Colorado Rapids defender Sam Vines, the rest of the match was neither exciting nor dominant from the MLS-heavy American side. While expectations should be kept realistic, this sort of play is not too encouraging.
One has to wonder if Gregg Berhalter will be willing to make some significant changes to the lineup heading into Thursday’s contest against Martinique. The USA will be favorites in this one as well, and this whole tournament seems like a tryout for the back half of the World Cup qualifying roster.
After losing 3-0 to Canada, Martinique sits at the bottom of Group B with the Americans’ last opponent, Haiti. The USA and its northern neighbors will be expected to advance, and wins by both squads would cement that reality. However, Berhalter will be just as concerned about individual performances as he is about the final scoreline on Thursday.
