Gregg Berhalter decided to deploy his top players during the Concacaf Nations League semifinal and final in June, and his squad came through by winning the inaugural iteration of the competition in a heated contest over rival Mexico, which featured plenty of drama and extra time heroics.
With the Gold Cup on the schedule just a month later, Berhalter sent home all of his European-based options from the first team and brought in a slew of MLS players who are ostensibly fighting for a few open spots on the end of the roster ahead of this fall’s World Cup qualifying.
Even with these rotations, the Americans have made it to their second final of the summer. The mostly reserve team sneaked by with 1-0 wins in four of its five matches, but just one contest stands in the way of another trophy. Of course, it will not be easy to take down Mexico for a second time, even if the USA’s neighbors have rotated their squad a bit as well. This one should have plenty of intrigue.
