Wolves 0 - 1 Tottenham Hotspur: Dele penalty good enough to take all three points

It wasn’t pretty by any stretch, but it’s a win!

Dele’s early penalty was somehow the only goal of the match Sunday afternoon as Spurs took all three points from Wolves by the final score of 1-0.

There were no changes to the squad from last week’s lineup that beat Manchester City. Notably, Harry Kane was on the bench as the transfer saga continues, but this could be the first real sign that he isn’t leaving north London this summer.

Match Timeline

1’ - We’re off and running at Molineux Stadium. Harry Kane is in the squad and available for selection, but he starts on the bench.

5’ - Nasty collision between Tanganga and Marcal. Looked to be head to head but, thankfully, seems to be just bodies crashing into each other. Both are up and okay.

9’ - Penalty Spurs! Sergio plays Dele in on a lovely through ball. Dele gives it a touch to get around Jose Sa, who then fouls the midfielder.

10’ - GOAL SPURS! Dele calmly sends Jose Sa the wrong way and passes the ball into the opposite corner!

14’ - Penalty shout at the other end. Adama Traore makes an absurd touch to get deep into the attacking third and passes it back to the middle. Skipp makes a rough touch and goes shoulder-to-shoulder with Nelson Semedo. No foul given and the ball goes out for a goal kick.

20’ - Twenty minutes in and while Spurs are leading, Wolves have control of the match with 70% possession. Spurs are throwing anyone they can at Traore and he’s literally shrugging them off.

27’ - Chance for Wolves as Traore leaves Tanganga for dead and finds Jimenez at the top of the penalty area. The curling effort is good but it goes just over the crossbar. Spurs need to get it together because they’re getting run over right now.

37’ - Better from Spurs as they spring the counter-attack. Steve gets in behind Wolves and can’t find Dele after that, but the flag goes up to nullify it anyways.

38’ - Tanganga goes into the book for a rough challenge on Marcal.

44’ - Skipp earns a yellow card as well after he falls asleep in midfield and clears out Traore after. Not a great half from him.

45’ - There will be five added minutes due to injuries.

Half Time: Despite giving up 60% possession and having only a couple of actual opportunities, Spurs are up 1-0. Wolves have been dangerous on a number of occasions, but they can’t find the end product. Adjustments need to be made or that’s going to change.

Second Half

46’ - No changes for either side to start the second half.

54’ - A bright spot for Spurs in this match is Sergio Reguilon. He’s been solid on the left flank as he intercepts another pass to break up an attack.

55’ - Chance for Spurs as Sonny gets free on a counter-attack thanks to Hojbjerg. Sonny tries to pass it into the middle but it’s cleared out. VAR confirms no handball on Kilman.

57’ - Raul Jimenez goes into the book for a rather dumb foul on Reguilon.

59’ - Another chance for Wolves as Semedo plays the ball into the penalty area but Neves can’t get enough power on it to make it dangerous. Hugo makes a relatively easy save to keep the match 1-0.

61’ - Yikes. Eric Dier coughs the ball up in midfield and Wolves spring the counter-attack. Traore finds himself one-on-one with Hugo but the French captain is up to the challenge, making a save to deny the Wolves attacker.

65’ - Spurs wake up and get a couple of cracks on net after a fantastic long pass from Hugo. Bergwijn forces a save on a curler and Son gets a shot that’s deflected then saved.

67’ - Substitution, Tottenham Hotspur: Giovani Lo Celso comes on for Lucas Moura.

70’ - Harry Kane is getting ready to come on. We’ll see how the tactics change when he inevitably comes on.

71’ - Substitution, Tottenham Hotspur: Harry Kane comes on for Heung-Min Son.

72’ - Substitution, Wolves: Dendocker comes on for Moutinho.

81’ - Touch of class from Stevie to spring an attack for Spurs. He burns past three defenders and passes to Kane after a glorious double-touch, but Kane can’t put the ball in the net.

83’ - Substitution, Wolves: Fabio Silva comes on for Saiss. Ait-Nouri comes on for Trincao.

85’ - Another chance for Spurs as Dier gets on the end of a corner kick, forcing a save by Jose Sa.

86’ - Professional foul by Hojbjerg earns a yellow card, but he didn’t have much of a choice. Good foul to stop an attack.

88’ - Spurs have been much better the last few minutes after Wolves made their changes. Hojbjerg breaks down Ait-Nouri and gets a shot on target but it’s another save for Jose Sa.

90’ - Substitution, Tottenham Hotspur: Harry Winks comes on for Steven Bergwijn.

90’ - There will be three added minutes.

90+1’ - Kane goes into the book for time wasting.

90+3’ - Crucial interception by Reguilon to deny Traore another chance to go at the defense.

FULL TIME: Spurs take all three points at Molineux Stadium, 1-0.

Thoughts on the Match:

  • I believe that match falls squarely in the “winning ugly” category. The first half was dominated by Wolves and while the second half was better at times, it’s incredible that Spurs kept a clean sheet.
  • Dele and Reguilon were both quite good. Lo Celso coming on in the second half helped quite a bit as Spurs got a better grasp in the final thirty minutes of the match.
  • Spurs midfield, however, was pretty much garbage. Skipp has a bright future but he was a black hole of possession and never seemed to get comfortable.
  • Kane got into the match and could have easily had a goal. With just over a week to go in the transfer window, time will tell if this is his last appearance for Spurs.
  • Spurs move up to third place for the time being with a few matches left in the weekend.
  • The focus switches to Thursday and the second leg of the Conference League play-off. Spurs will need a result to move on to the group stage.
