Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of strengthening the right flank is complete.
After targeting numerous players to help at right back, Spurs have landed the services of 22-year-old Emerson Royal from FC Barcelona. Both clubs confirmed the transfer via social media, and they had a little fun with it.

Initially, it looked like Spurs would miss out on this one because Emerson wanted to stay in Spain and fight for playing time, but with Barcelona’s finances still in shambles it appears he was convinced to leave. He’ll certainly get a pay bump and will compete for playing time at right back and right wingback depending on the formation. While we expected Takehiro Tomiyasu to be the player Spurs signed for this position weeks ago, this materialized just in the last few days as Fabio Paratici’s scattershot approach to transfers looks to have paid off.
It’s unclear as of press time who the Brazilian international will be replacing, if anyone. Reports yesterday had Everton interested in either Matt Doherty or Serge Aurier, the latter of whom has been linked away from Spurs for months with links coming and going right up to the wire. Now it’s possible that both stay, meaning Spurs will have four fullbacks on the right flank. Japhet Tanganga may slot into RCB in a back three, but there’s still a logjam that will have to be addressed.
Welcome to Tottenham Hotspur, Emerson!
