Report: Newcastle in talks for Spurs’ Carter-Vickers

Cam’s contract expires next summer, so it’s pretty much now or never.

And to think I actually considered the possibility this might be a slow transfer deadline day. I am such a sweet summer child. There’s now a report that Newcastle United are in talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a move for Spurs academy graduate and central defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.

We’ve seen Newcastle linked to Cam before now, but only in the vaguest of terms. To be honest, there isn’t much here either, but hey — this is a fairly typical level of reporting for a potential transfer deadline day deal, so let’s go with it, yeah?

The tenor of the tweet seems to suggest it might be a loan instead of an outright purchase, but I believe Carter-Vickers is entering the last year of his contract, so this is quite possibly Spurs’ last chance to get any amount of money for him. If he doesn’t head out this summer, it’s likely he leaves next summer on a free transfer.

Carter-Vickers looked cromulent in a few early preseason appearances but was god-awful in the first Europa Conference League play-in match against Pacos de Ferreira. That said, I think he’s a Premier League footballer (if only for a lower half or promoted side) so it’d be good to get a little cash for him. He clearly doesn’t have a future at Spurs, so figuring out what to do with him today would be good for everyone involved.
