Going into the transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur knew that the defense needed help. Director of Football Fabio Paratici was brought in to target players that could help Spurs improve and give a boost to new manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s expected back three formation.
Today, Spurs took a huge step in improving by completing the transfer of Cristian Romero from Serie A club Atalanta.
The deal is reportedly €50m + €5m in add-ons, a hell of a purchase considering we were concerned about cash flow going into this transfer window. The 23-year-old Argentina International has burst onto the scene in the last two seasons and was a true standout for Atalanta. Paratici locked onto him early in the transfer window along with several other targets. It’s also not every day you get a chance to sign a defender of the year, which is exactly what Romero was in Serie A.
Romero should bring stability to a back line that had it’s share of problems defending last season. While Spurs are still working on shuffling up that group as Takehiro Tomiyasu is expected to join now that his Olympic run is over, there’s still questions to answer about the current group. For now, Romero is a big signing and we should be over the moon about this one. He joins Bryan Gil and Pierluigi Gollini as signings for the season.
Welcome to Tottenham Hotspur, Cristian Romero!
EDIT: Updated to reflect that Spurs had also signed Pierluigi Gollini.
