DONE DEAL: Spurs Women announce signing of defender Asmita Ale from Aston Villa

This looks like a really good signing!

The rebuild of Tottenham Hotspur Women continues with a new signing today, and this one looks especially exciting! Spurs Women announced on their social media feeds and website that they have acquired England U19 defender Asmita Ale from Aston Villa.

Aston Villa finished 10th in the WSL last season, their first in the top flight, and while their defensive record wasn’t very good, Ale was one of their brighter defensive stars as an 18-year old. Still just 19, she is already showing signs of being a very good defender. Her stats are pretty eye-popping, and she already has a year of top flight experience under her belt. Spurs aren’t a title contending side, but at Tottenham she’ll be surrounded by better players, and she has a ton of room to grow. This looks pretty exciting.

Tottenham are in a place where they need both an influx of solid, veteran talent and some exciting young players that they can develop over time. Ale looks like she’s in the latter camp. She’s also the first female player of Nepalese origin to play for a WSL side, which is also pretty cool.

Villa previously announced that Asmita had left the club after denying the club’s offer of a new contract. It implies that she’s either ambitious, ready for a change, or Spurs simply made her a better offer. All of them are valid and all of them work, as far as I’m concerned.

I’m stoked about this signing and am looking forward to seeing what she can do for Spurs Women next season. Welcome to Tottenham, Asmita!
