Spurs Women announce Herbalife as back-of-shirt sponsors

This, apparently, is a thing now.

With two days to go before Tottenham Hotspur Women open their WSL season, the club made an important sponsorship update. Spurs Women announced that, in a first-of-its-kind arrangement, the club will have Herbalife Nutrition as a back-of-the-shirt sponsor for the upcoming season.

American readers who follow MLS will likely recognize Herbalife as the main shirt sponsor of LA Galaxy since what feels like time immemorial. I’m not exactly thrilled with the choice; Herbalife is a direct marketing seller of herbal supplements and nutrition products that has been equated to a modern-day Amway by supporters but closer to a pyramid scheme by critics. However, their money spends just as well as any other sponsor, I suppose. I wasn’t aware that WSL clubs could have back-of-shirt sponsors until this very moment, and this is likely a preview of what is to come for Premier League teams.

Spurs Women open their WSL season against Birmingham City this Saturday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It’s the first opportunity to see Rehanne Skinner’s new-look Spurs side, which went through a major offseason refresh, in a competitive match. Spurs are hoping to improve on last season’s disappointing eighth place league finish.

Kickoff time is 10:00 a.m. ET / 3 p.m. UK. It is not televised in the USA or the UK but will be streamed for free on The FA Player.
